Q&A With A Power Lifter Fueled By B.U.L.K Jerky

Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got involved in powerlifting.

A. Hey BulkFam! My name is Chris Mason and I’m a 29 year old competitive powerlifter out of Pittsburgh, PA.  I have been weight training for about 15 years now using a variety of training styles and methods for a number of different goals.  My educational background is in Exercise Physiology as well as a few other Health Science fields, giving me a solid knowledge base to apply to my training.  

I have always been a fan of the strength sports such as powerlifting and strongman, but I did not do my first competition until 2012. At the time, I was training as a bodybuilder but I wanted to see where I stacked up in the strength world.  After that first competition, I was hooked!

Q. How often do you train & compete?

I train year round in some capacity and I   complete about 1-3 times per year. The 2 or 3 months leading into a powerlifting   competition are very structured and intense, so the rest of the year I try to train smart, build on my weaknesses, and have fun doing different types of training.  I’m very health conscious and use the down time between competition to relax and make sure my body and mind are in order.

Q. What is your best performance in competition?

A. To date, my best lift in competition is a 585lb deadlift in the 165lb weight class.  I’m currently working towards a 600lb lift.

Q. How does B.U.L.K come into your training regimen? How often do you consume B.U.L.K Beef Jerky?

A. Powerlifting is a sport with weight classes, so I do monitor my diet and try to stay lean most of the year. B.U.L.K Beef Jerky has been a great addition to my diet during the offseason and competition prep.  I love it in the offseason simply because it’s delicious and is a source of protein, and I have found it extremely valuable during my competition prep. When I diet strictly leading into a competition so that I can make my weight class, the one macronutrient I reduce is carbohydrates.  It has always been hard to find quality snacks that are low in carbohydrates, high in protein, and not jam-packed with additives. B.U.L.K Beef Jerky has the nutritional content I am looking for in a high quality lean product and the variety of cuts and flavors help make my diet plan more interesting.  I’m snacking on B.U.L.K at least 3-5 times a week, more often leading into a competition.

Q. How did you hear about B.U.L.K?

A. One of my older brothers, Matt, hooked me up with a few B.U.L.K products during my prep for my last competition.  We both found B.U.L.K on Instagram and loved the message and vibe that B.U.L.K promotes, and that is just as important to me as the products themselves.

Q. What is your favorite cut and flavor?

A. The Mild Jalapeno Beef Jerky is my favorite right now.

Q. What does kindness mean to you?

A. Kindness is showing concern about the well-being of others.  Kindness is part of the unseen fabric of our universe that connects all.
